Circularity is a fundamental principle for sustainable and resilient systems. The 2G Bioethanol project from NON-FOOD biomass uses bagasse — the fibrous residue from sugarcane processing — as its primary feedstock. Through the advanced ENI-Versalis PROESA technology, the complex sugars contained in cellulose are released and converted into ethanol.
Processing 275,000 tonnes of bagasse yields approximately 50,000 tonnes of second-generation bioethanol for use as biofuel. The process promotes a low-carbon circular economy model, adding value to the waste from the Egyptian Sugar and Integrated Industries and transforming agricultural residues into high-value biofuels. The project supports environmental objectives, fosters innovation and ensures sustainable economic development, delivering concrete benefits for the local territory, making it a replicable model for the valorization of agro-industrial waste.
