Piazza Pia – Urban redevelopment and new tunnel in Rome

Description

The iconic Jubilee 2025 project, signed by Proger, has been defined as a model of excellence in Italian engineering and the ability to manage complex interventions in contexts of high historical and cultural value. The urban and infrastructure redevelopment work unites Castel Sant’Angelo and St. Peter’s in a unique perspective, eliminating vehicular traffic from the square and enhancing one of the capital’s most recognizable places, which now offers citizens and tourists a new pedestrian area through the extension of the existing tunnel along the Lungotevere in Sassia.

Commissioned by the Municipality of Rome and Anas for an investment of €85.3 million, the project saw the Proger design team successfully overcome numerous technical challenges, including the management of interference with existing primary sewers and the discovery of valuable archaeological finds. The 130-metre extension to the existing tunnel was realized using the cut-and-cover method, which allowed works to be carried out simultaneously above and below ground, ensuring fast execution times and minimal impact on the surrounding area.
