Proger, with Rocksoil and Pini Swiss Engineers, is part of the group of designers indicated by the consortium led by WeBuild that was awarded the contract for the executive design and execution of the doubling works of the high-capacity railway line Messina – Catania, section Giampilieri – Fiumefreddo, 2nd Functional Lot Taormina – Giampilieri. Commissioned by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana – RFI (Gruppo FS Italiane), the project is worth 1.003 billion euros.
The project involves the construction of a new railway line approximately 28.3 km long in the Messina – Catania section that connects to the existing line before the current Fiumefreddo station and then reconnects to the existing Giampilieri station. The route of the new line develops mainly in the tunnel.
As part of the construction site, the project is structured on 60 construction site areas and 8 mobile construction sites for the excavation of natural tunnels. In this context, particular attention was paid to achieving the best possible result in terms of energy and water sustainability on all site areas, fixed and mobile, through the adoption of design solutions such as the optimization of sun exposure – to maximize self-production from photovoltaics – and of the water cycles between mobile and fixed construction sites, recovering 100% of the run-off water.
