The President of the Campania Region, Vincenzo De Luca, presented the final design of the New Santobono Children’s Hospital in Naples, created by the design team led by Proger and composed of Manens, Pinearq (arch. Albert de Pineda), Inar, Arethusa and Zigarella.
The new Santobono project involves the construction of the largest pediatric center in Italy, an innovative 437-bed facility that integrates architecture, design and environmental sustainability over an area of 85,000 sq. m. It will be a child-friendly, accessible and inclusive hospital, with spaces dedicated to play, reception and family services, with the provision of medical treatments organized by progressive levels of care intensity.
It will also be a “green hospital,” which will redevelop the eastern edge of the city of Naples, providing the community with green spaces, urban gardens, and an educational farm. The design is aimed at maximum integration into the landscape context, as well as maximizing natural lighting, with an orientation that will offer inpatient rooms views of Vesuvius or the sea.
The project also focuses on new technologies and research: The operating block will have 14 rooms with advanced technologies such as surgical robots and video streaming systems. The hospital will have a technology center dedicated to advanced diagnostics, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy, as well as innovation and integration with artificial intelligence, with laboratories for translational research and bioengineering, with production of tissues, organoids, digital and mechanical prostheses.
The facility will also include a simulation room for advanced training in hyper-realistic environments based on augmented and virtual reality, and a control room for telemedicine, teleconsultation and telemonitoring, with the aim of bringing the hospital directly to the patient’s home, reducing hospital stays and the need for physical access to the hospital.
“Once again, Proger is at the forefront of excellence in hospital design, with an impressive yet open and sustainable structure that will change the face of the eastern area of Naples,” commented Marta Del Cimmuto, architect and project manager at Proger. “Leading the design of Italy’s largest children’s hospital represents a new milestone for Proger in the sector, given also the ongoing management activity for the Nuovo Pediatrico Gaslini in Genoa: child care becomes another relevant focus of our professional growth path“.
